Metropolis Contest

Hello fellow Metropolitans. I come to you with a message asking if you are interested in a Metropolis Forum Layout Contest.

Before we can actually go through with this idea, the admins and myself would like to see the number of users willing to participate in this event. As you know, before the vBulletin upgrade, Metropolis prided itself for allowing users several different layouts to choose from while browsing around the forums. With the introduction of the vB 3.0, we've only had one layout so far.

Even though we would be able to make layouts ourselves, we would also want to acknowledge the members who has talent in graphic design by giving them the ooportunity to design something for the forum.

It has also been suggested that if we ever go through with this contest, each contest wil be separated by "themes" with a winner from each theme. The said "themes" [i.e. anime, video games, jrock, music, etc] will be voted for and the top 2 or 3 popular themes will be used as subjects for the entries. Winners will be decided by popularity votes.

So far this is a very rough proposal, as we are wondering whether any members are interested at all in joining. Any suggestions, comments are, of course, welcome.

im interested in joining. though you might want to have a sort of Miscellaneous category or something.

also, i would like to encourage some members to not make something that fits into a particular category. remember that not everyone likes elements of popculture, and something nice and simple would suffice and can look as elegant as a swirly, flowing image of an anime character or something.

finally, id like to specifically mention that not everyone has cable or dsl. it would be a shame if someone really liked a specific layout, but chose not to use it because it would have been a pain to keep loading the image on dialup (this applied to me with the former Beramode layout, i REALLY liked that one, but it ended up being too inconvenient). so if you want to make a header that is large, try and make it a small file.

I'd be interested in joining, but I'm already working on crossing over my old layout from VB2 to VB3 on a forum where I'm a high-ranking member. @_@ Perhaps when I finish with that, I might be able to try and scrape up a decent layout. I miss the White Cross version on here. ;_;

I wanna join!! Is it to help make a new theme for the board? I've tried making vBulliten themes before.. it wasn't that it came out badly or anything, it just took a really long time (because I made the buttons too) and I doubt I have the paitence to make another board theme again ^^;

If you guys want, I think you should be able to collaborate with other members/friends? I mean, making layouts is not a piece of cake, so I think it'd be nice idea to allow collaboration.

The contest would be to make another board theme, probably including at the very least the more common icons, if not all of them. More details will come depending on interest. As of now, the only restrictions are: 1) it should be viewable for all ages (ie., no adult stuff); 2) It does not exceed 775 pixels in width (to accomodate the 800x600 users; 3) the image as a whole is not uber large. The heigh of the current layout is acceptable, but using a wall paper for the header isn't. Larger images take a long time to load.

I think it would be nice to join. :) Although, who's gonna make the color scheme of the board (I mean color of tables, etc)?

I guess since admins are the only one who can access the layout panel, we can provide a template to follow for colors? I don't know.

I think the Terra layout was a gift layout. Someone saved the html for the index page, then went in and editted it directly. I suppose participants can try that. We'll think of something a little more feasible; this thread is really just to get a general idea of how many people would be interested ^^.

Well, since we have quite a bit of people interested in this contest, we're probably going to hold a poll for the "Contest Theme" :D I just hope you guys will still stay interested by the time contest is over. T_T

I'm interested, but I don't think I can do it without collabrating with someone. I'm already working on a different layout theme for a different forum, and it's giving me a headache.

I think I'd have to collaborate as well... I don't have much time, since I'll be leaving to go on a month-long trip to Japan/China in about two weeks

Well, talk to a member who you want to collaborate wtih, and then just tell us when we officially announce the start of the contest.

i, uh, count me in as a "maybe". i'd love to paticipate and make graphics, but my html skills are well below average, and i'm not sure how making themes really work so i was kinda mum there for a good while. u.u
