Okay, I am in trouble.
We are supposed to be teaching public elementary school kids every tuesday as part of our social studies program. I teach English. It just irks me to hell that grade six kids in our country cannot even write simple sentences, somtheing that I could do in kindergarden. I am having a hard time teaching subject-verb-direct object agreement...
Has anyone here ever taught professionally? Any tips? I really would like to teach them properly..

Hm. I'm not a professional teacher, but I do teach classes at a public library for forgeion language. I'm teaching Sign Language.
The best thing is to keep trying, and be patient. Do the same thing over and over, review them often, drill it in their minds. That's about all I can suggest. =/

Teach them things that they can use, in ways that connect to their everyday lives. Find ways to make it into something that they care about, and they will learn more quickly. You can use things like music and TV and movies to connect what you're teaching to things that they are interested in.

Since it's english, I say make cracks at bad grammar. Make it so that they can join in too. Have them go out and find examples of bad grammar and such in the media, from their fellow students, etc.

DUDE! At least you guys are teaching english.. try teaching catechism to kids. And they ask the hardest questions too! =.= *coughcough*
But I have found that children are very much fond of drawing. yup yup. You could've tried a drawing activity.. and then you can get them to describe their work. It would help them with their adjectives and their sentence construction).

Skye:: Yep, the kids LOOOVE drawing... ;)
I use it as an introduction most of the time. I remember when I taught pronouns, I brought a superman and a clark kent doll. I explained that pronouns are to nouns as superman is to clark kent (something like that, with more elaboration).
